Business Etiquette & Service Excellence
Having participated in numerous BESE lessons, I realized that I have accumulated many skills that are applicable and useful for the later stage of my life. There were many lessons and videos that left me thinking, picturing what would I do in certain situations. But frankly speaking, I enjoyed most of the lessons as it enabled me to gain an insight on many different aspects of service that I did not realize until now that was important in the industry.
Each lesson was a fruitful learning journey.
The first lecture topic which I found practical and useful is “Delighting your customers 1”. It taught me how to make each and every customer feel valued and respected. In modern day Singapore, we are known as a food haven for most tourists, as well as the 5 star accommodations and facilities. But what is lacking is the quality service that Singapore provides. We pride ourselves on being world class in terms of food, attractions as well as accommodations, but why are we not focusing on the key to ensure good customer satisfaction?
I have come across many embarrassing moments with the service staff, even in high-class restaurants. Many lacked the sincerity in their service, and most are not willing to go the extra mile for customers. Thus, I feel disappointed in Singaporeans in this aspect. Therefore through this chapter, I have learnt many ways to delight customers and flexibility is essential when dealing with customers. “All rules are meant to be broken” is a sentence from the lecture that I have instilled in my mind.
Having taught this chapter to us, it would greatly assist us, the leaders of the industry in the future, to provide excellent service and to raise the level of service up by a higher notch.
The next lecture topic which I found applicable to everyday life is “Customer Perception 2”. The Seven deadly statements truly reflect the miserable excuses found in restaurants and shops worldwide. I have asked myself after the lecture, how many times have I encountered similar situations where the service provider came up with such excuses? And how many times as a service provider, have I given such excuses to my customers?
Countless times.
It is an embarrassing fact that I am also guilty for contributing to poor customer service, as I felt that it was easier to turn away difficult customer requests just by giving an excuse rather than going the extra mile just for one customer. I believe many service providers possess similar thoughts as me. But throughout the lecture, it made me think otherwise.
Therefore I am thankful for the useful tips on how not to give such excuses to customers. It really teaches me how to take customers problems into my own hands and assume personal responsibility for the customer’s satisfaction. Now to me, excellent customer service is a challenge that I feel all service providers should try to overcome using the best of their abilities.
The last lecture which had an impact on me was “The Art Of Corporate Entertainment 1&2”. It has an impact on me as I believe business meals are an inevitable part of doing business with another party. Small simple gestures such as dining etiquette portrays a lot about the another person that you are doing business with. Therefore I feel that it is essential to take note of social etiquette as it is part of making good first impressions.
One thing that made me realize about modern days society through the lecture is Chivalry. The lecture mentions about “Man-die-first” policy, which I feel is lost throughout the world. Many guys that I encounter do not even bother to hold the door for the ladies behind them. Another point to take note is the bus and Mrt etiquette. I am always irritated to see those who rush into the Mrt without caring for those who are alighting. There are also many inconsiderate youngsters who do not bother to give up their seats for those in need. The recent courtesy campaign by Gurmit Singh and Irene Ang’s posters can be seen every time you board a bus or Mrt. It is quite depressing to know that the government has to step in to ensure that Singaporeans play their part in being courteous. To me, I feel that such general etiquette should come from within, and not being constantly reminded to do such acts.
Generally, I would like to say that having BESE lessons made me a better individual. It enables me to think of other’s plight before mine and put myself into customer’s shoes. Knowing the right etiquette in business meetings as well as social events makes me feel prepared and ready to tackle the business world. I am proud to say that I have grown and matured into a better person whom I believe would help play a part in society.

I would never ever forget this very day.
The day where everyone's faces were in complete agony.
The day where our legs ached till it could ache no more.
The day where beads of perspiration POURED down our foreheads.
The day where we wanted to give up so badly.
Okay. STUMPED is what I am talking about. It is an event held by our very own HTMIG who are out to torture us! This amazing race is out to test our wits and stamina! It puts both our mental and physical abilities to the test.
We were made to assemble in school by 8.30 am, and it was freaking early! I barely had more than 4 hours of sleep! WHAT A TORTURE!
Three big bags (The big, bulky, SUPERR unglam kind) were given to us, saying that we would need the bags in the later part of the race, BUT IT WAS BULL SHIT! We were so naive and actually carried it from the start till the end, whereas some other groups did not even carry! Call us stupid, call us dumb, we were just the super obedient kind okay..
Haha, i really had the intention to cheat a little, by calling my baby during the race to help us out in times of difficulty... but who'd actually expect the HTMIGs to plan ahead about this matter!! LOOK AT WHAT HAPPENED TO OUR POOR PHONES A
It was wrapped with lots of masking tape to prevent us from opening it! Any tampering found would result in being pulled out from the race!
Our wallets were in there too! We were only allowed to have our EZ link cards and 5 dollars along the race! ):
TIME FOR THE FIRST CLUE:
This clue means ORCHARD. ORCHARD RD! And our lovable JO, thought the can of rambutans were longans! And so, diverted us away from the actual answer! But all thanks to Alistair who had mouthed the answer to us! THANK YOU(:
So clue 1 solved! 8 more to go!
The folowing clues were no easy feat! But thankfully with a stroke of luck, we managed to succeed in finding the places! We went from School ( tampines) to orchard, marina square, Suntec city, clarke quay.... it is indeed a RACE IN THE CITY!!
Some activities we were made to perform:
Passing rubberbands from one chopstick to the next! And we also had to pass marbles!
The next clue is the clue which made us all feel so dejected!
Okay, the clue was 'walking on waters for a 1000 years'
We went to Clarke Quay, assuming the location was situated there, but it was not. We took more than half an hour walking around Clarke quay, when rachel said the actual location could be at millenium walk instead!
So, off we go, back to where we were in the first place. What a huge time waster!
And our positions dropped terribly. We are the first 2 groups for our route in the beginning, but we fell all the way to the 7 and 8 positions! ):
We assumed this was the correct fountain at millenium walk, as it had a huge area for us to walk on water (as related to the clue) BUT IT WAS NOT!! The actual place was here instead (below) :
You call this walking on waters?? It's just a small miserable patch of water! HMPHX. The picture above seems more like the actual clue!
Some camwhoring along the way(:
The clue 'capsules' brought us here, to our very own magnificient SINGAPORE FLYER!
Next was Merlion park(:
And we had to find a family of 4 to take a picture with as part of the race! They were nice nice people!
At the next location we had to answer some tough questions, and if we had made a mistake, it would result in lipstick being drawn on our faces! Bbut thanks for our dearest Wan ting who volunteered to help us shoulder all of the forfeit!
Still so pretty despite the lipstick on her face! LOVES(:
We had finished the race! Despite wanting to give up along the way, i am glad we held out as a team and carried on! I seriously love you guys!! (:
After this whole tiring race, all of us 'limped' to the pepper lunch outlet at suntec for our lunch!
I guess this would be the last clique bonding session for the entire year as we would be cruelly seperated from each other into different classes the following semester ):
And ma de, sandy, alicia, wan ting, drake, alwin, qing hao, rachel will be going to Hong Kong together! Gen will also be meeting them there!!
As for me, i would be going to China with baby to visit his family (: Lots of activities lined up for us in China! Playing with real snow and eating my xiao long bao~
Soo.. leaving only poor Jolene who will be in Singapore for the holidays! Don't be envious don't be envious girl! :P
On a serious note,
I will miss my fun-loving clique lots!!
i will miss ma de and her lame lame side
i will miss Gen for her laughter and brainteasers and gossips
i will miss JO for her double chin and her picture taking and her "free food always taste the best" slogan
i will miss Wan Ting for the times we shared our beauty secrets and the confiding moments
i will miss rachel for her cute " we are a team, team , team" expression
i will miss qinghao for his funny and humorous teasing of Alicia and JO
i will miss sandy for her shortness! 'where is sandy? i can't see her!'
i will miss alicia for her naive, cute side and the pronounciation of ramen!
i will miss alwin for his 'amazing' pizza trick at pastamania!
:)iloveyouguys!

We had a very public (and loud) argument at Serangoon Mrt station, where onlookers walked by giving us weird looks... ( What's wrong with them?!?! Wrong of us to argue on Valentines day meh?)
And it didnt help that every girl who walked past was in a state of bliss, holding on to bouquets and bouquets of flowers!
I. am. jealous.
This was by far the worst argument we had. The feeling of breaking up was on the verge of being said... All those screaming, yelling and tears... *Sigh* IT WAS A BAD BAD NIGHT to remember.
Oh well, anyway its ALL over! We are back to our lovey dovey ways! And dear dear has apologised by doing many sweet and meaningful things to make up for it (:
our lovely pair of guardian angels. Hope they'll guide us through our everlasting love (:
Baby was so funny!! He had to find a 'perfect spot' for us to put the necklaces onto each other!
Us with our precious gifts to mark this special night.
My heart is for you to keep and to hold.
We shall be together, never apart..
And my darling boy, my precious,
Just remember,
I will always love you.
which was to camwhore! :)
I guess the photos we took could add up to about 300 photos!! Haha, and i had a really great time fooling around with my crazy yet lovable bunch of friends!
These were all drawn by gen! With our names on it:)
Haha, its all drawn with a downwards sloping mouth with credits to our real life "model" JOLENE!

An IKEA trip was organised at the spur of the moment just to kill time! It was due to the 3 hours break that we had and so.. we went to IKEA for lunch and for some fun loving times! :)
Although this incident is outdated,
But i just want to blog about it as we took many many photos!!
On the way there....
Oh, i still could remember this bus smelled super weird! Upon entering the bus, we were all greeted by an overwhelming stench. And judging from what Qinghao said, the stench got stronger and stronger as they proceeded to the back. YUCKS.
2,4,6 and ma de:)
Presenting JO, SANDY AND ALWIN~
Ma de and Gen:)
LUNCH TIME! Actually for this photo we had taken alot of shots, and it was hilarious if you see through every one in a quick motion! But i shall only upload one.

Haha, we just came back from deardear's house, and we practically shifted amost everything into my house! The whole evening was spent packing deardear's messymessy room and throwing away lots and lots of stuff (all covered with a thick layer of dust! EWW) Deardear is sure a messy messy man!
Haha, so from this day onwards, deardear will be under my charge! Any misbehavior coming out from him will result in him being locked outside for the whole night! ( and i'm not allowing you to bring along your fav blanket out! The stinky one~)
Hees:)
By the way, Christmas is just around the corner! As a matter of fact, it's just 3 more days from now! i'm sure looking forward to this year's christmas as i will be spending it with deardear's family:) Can't wait to be eating a nice meal of pizza and drinking red wine and the exchanging of gifts! :) Haha, deardear and i will be going out to buy a perfect bottle of red wine tommorrow! And i saw one seemingly perfect one at Marks and spencers!
Hope my knowledge of wine gained from the past semester's F&B lessons will be put to good use!
This is random,
but i wanna play mahjong! MA DE and WAN TING must come to play again!!!!!!!! :) we shall revive the good old times of playing mad ma de:)

Especially the male lead, Robert Pattinson!
He was D.E.L.I.C.I.O.U.S! (looking, i mean)
He gives me a 'Chuck Bass' kinda feel, if you know what i am talking about, the mysterious yet charming personality....
Haha, I guess every female who watched this movie will be swooning over him! Who wouldn't want a handsome, cool, charming, mysterious, strong, sweet, caring guy who only has the eyes for you.........(the list could go on and on) as a boyfriend??
He is the absolute perfect fantasy boyfriend! :)
(Deardear, i said Fantasy boyfriend, so don't get jealous! i still love you the most! :P)
Haha, i am dying to talk about this wonderful show!!
This show is truly different from what you will expect! Who would have thought that Vampires are so gorgeous?! With their beautifully shimmering skin under the sunlight. Their skin would be perfect on us ladies, with that flawless fair complextion! And the shimmering factor would be a bonus!:)
I seriously thought that this show would be gory, with bloodsucking vampires! But luckliy it was not! It was a pretty romance story~ SWEET
Shall not elaborate more and spoil the show for you guys!
